Your Guide to a Smooth Toilet Replacement Process

The first step in replacing your toilet is to gather all the necessary materials and tools. You will need a new toilet, wax ring, closet bolts, adjustable wrench, screwdriver, putty knife, and possibly a hacksaw or reciprocating saw. Make sure to measure the rough-in distance of your existing toilet before purchasing a new one to ensure it will fit properly.

Next, turn off the water supply to the toilet by shutting off the valve located behind or near the base of the toilet. Flush the toilet to drain as much water as possible from the tank and bowl. Use a sponge or towel to soak up any remaining water in the tank and bowl.

Once you have removed all water from the old toilet, disconnect the supply line from the bottom of the tank using an adjustable wrench. Loosen and remove any nuts or bolts securing the base of the toilet to the floor. Carefully see more lift up on the old toilet and set it aside.

With the old toilet out of the way, use a putty knife to scrape away any old wax ring residue from the flange on the floor. This area must be clean and smooth before installing the new wax ring for proper sealing.

Now it’s time to install your new toilet. Begin by placing a new wax ring around the flange on the floor with its tapered side facing up towards where toilet will sit. Carefully lower new toilet onto flange making sure that closet bolts line up with hole at base of toilet . Gently press down on toilet make sure wax ring creates secure seal between base and floor .

Secure toilet floor by tightening nuts onto closet bolts until toilet is stable . Be careful not over-tighten as this could crack porcelain .

Reconnect supply line bottom tank , turn water supply back on , fill tank , flush check for leaks .
